Aspire Hotel Sydney - Guest's Thank you letter

I was a lucky winner of your competition conducted through the "Daily Examiner" Grafton for a two night stay at your hotel.
We found the hotel staff and the accommodation first class and could not fault the service in any w&y , the reception desk staff were always most pleasant and only too willing to help and advise us, which made our stay all the more enjoyable.

In the two days we had in Sydney we managed to do and see everything we had planned.

I would like to thank you again for our great stay with you and will certainly recommend your hotel to anyone wishing to be advised on accommodation in Sydney and also when I should need to return to Sydney myself.

Thanking you,

Mary Katte

Sydney Hotel Reviews: “Cheap hotel close to Sydney” - Aspire Hotel Sydney

This is a good hotel that is about 10-15 minute walk to Darling Harbour and a bit more to the CBD. The hotel was clean and rooms were a good size with a balcony (the east side has a view of the city). The beds were a bit soft for my liking and I ended up with a stiff neck but then again when you are paying just over $100 p/n for a place so close the CBD I am not going to complain about that too much. The rooms in general are what I would expect from paying this price, clean but dated bathrooms and living areas. There is a fridge in your room but no minibar, although you can purchase some items from a vending machine in the lobby.

The staff were mostly friendly although some of them could do with understanding and exhibiting some common sense. When I arrived at 1:50pm on the tuesday the staff member at first told me the room wasnt ready as "check in was at 2pm". I pointed out that 10 minutes shouldn't make a lot of difference and then she called housekeeping and found out the room was actually ready. To my mind it would have been better for her to check before making the statement? The other example was at checkout I had organised a shuttle to the airport, when I paid and the shuttle turned up they hadnt given me a ticket so I asked at reception.

Hi im Karin - The Aspire Hotel Sydney Intern

Ninety days ago, I flew into Australia for 6 months. Three months have passed and I am writing this article about myself and my great life in Australia.

My name is Karin Lodewijks and I am a 19 years old girl from the Netherlands, studying Hotel and Event Management. Currently I am doing my internship at Aspire Hotel Sydney for 5 months.

After so much thinking, talking and saving my money, December last year I decided to come to Sydney for six months. First of all, I came here for my internship (of course) but secondly, because of the culture, the beautiful landscapes and the kindness, peacefulness and the hospitality of the people who live here. My thoughts and wishes came true and I am having a wonderful time in Sydney.

At this moment I am living in Bondi Junction and every weekday I am travelling to Ultimo to work at Aspire Hotel Sydney. During the months I have been here now, I brought the things I have learned at school into practice and I have gained a lot of working experience. It is really interesting to see how all the different departments work and communicate together, but at the same time are trying to reach their own goals. I already have had a look at some different departments such as housekeeping, reservations and sales and marketing but most of time has been spent with the front desk team. After my time at the Aspire, I hope I will find a position that suits me the best within the hotel industry.

During the weekends I am trying to see a lot of different things in Sydney and the surrounding areas and enjoying the different climate. It is really strange for me as a Dutch girl to celebrate Christmas and the New Years period in sunny Sydney. But I am looking forward to it. When my internship is finished, I am going to travel around Australia and I would like to go to New Zealand. I am so excited!

Time is flying - in 3 months I will have to go back to the Netherlands. But before that, I am enjoying and living the good life ‘Down Under’.

Letter from a Happy Guest of Aspire Hotel Sydney

Letter from a happy guest of Aspire Hotel Sydney

Dear Aspire;

Thankyou so much for providing us with the room for two nights at Aspire Ultimo two weeks ago. We had a fantastic weekend and the motel was in such a perfect postition to access the city and in particular China town.

The room though starting to show some age was clean, very quiet and an extremely comfy bed. Just up the road was a great little cafe where we had breakfast both mornings. We loved the convenience and ease of driving in and being able to leave the car for the two nights and walk to all the night spots - we had a great meal late on Friday night in China Town.

I have recommended the Aspire to all the staff here in Tamworth for any country person looking for an affordable stay in the city which is really quite easy drive to. I can't thank you enough for being able to provide this stay to us at such short notice.

Two Interns at Aspire Hotel Sydney

Aspire Hotel Sydney currently has two interns studying at the property, below is a brief write-up by Sevada and Mourad.

Sevada Yeroomian

My name is Sevada Yeroomian borne Iran, and from origin Armenian. I am 24 years old and live at the moment in Holland, studying hotel and event management. I am doing an internship at the Aspire hotel to gain more experience in the hotel industries, because of the small organization I choice the Aspire hotel.

I believe that a small organization can provide you more inside information and more experience of a particular business. There are a few things I would like to learn and experience during my internship; I would like to see how a hotel works in general.

I would like to see and experience how every department works and how they use the certain methods and strategies to gain their goals. And the most important is to learn what the link is between what I have learned at school and how the actual business works. My goal is to be a hotel manager and eventually a part of a great organization where I can grow and learn more. I would like to migrate to Australia and start my career here, I love the country and the opportunities it has.

The kind people and diversity off different cultures is positive points where I can see myself work and enjoy life. As everyone I also have certain things that I love to do in my daily life. I love sport, reading biography off business man, traveling and last but not least cooking and eating.

Mourad Sarkis

My name is Mourad Sarkis and I’m from Holland. I have been working in the Royal Dutch Army as a scout. I wanted something else and worked for one year at Staples as a salesman, just to think about my future. I thought about a study and chosen for Hotel and Event management. In my spare time I love to read books and listen to music. Since a few months I found my self a new hobby, photography, and love to go to American V8 shows just to take pictures.

I fell in love with American Cars since I bought my first American muscle car a Chevrolet Camaro 1979. I’m in Australia now for two weeks as an intern at the Aspire Hotel. At school we have learned a lot about how to keep a hotel running. The only thing is that I didn’t have had any experience of working in a hotel. After a long search there was the Aspire hotel who gave me the opportunity to do my internship in here and gain some working experience.

I wanted to do it in a small hotel, so that I can see how the whole hotel works, from top to down! In the future I want to be a hotel manager abroad the Netherlands. I have chosen for Australia because of here beauty and a lot of different cultures, what I do like.

And I think that Australia can offer you a lot if you work hard for it!

Ultimo Sydney - From farm land to trendy inner city suburb

Ultimo is now considered by many to be among Sydney's best localities for inner suburban office and character residential areas. Now home to the Aspire Hotel Sydney, Ultimo is a far cry from the past of once being an industrial and slum area.

Ultimo - An interesting naming origin

Ultimo was the name given to the 34 acre estate of Dr John Harris granted to him in 1803, named somewhat humorously after a clerical error in a legal case against Harris which prevented him being court martialled. His offence was listed as 'ultimo' having occurred in the previous month whereas it should have been cited as 'instant' having occurred in the same month. Harris Street is named after him.

Historic Buildings
The Ultimo area remained as farmland, in possession of the Harris family, until it was subdivided in 1859 with the first residences owned by the descendants of John Harris. Residential development accelerated in the 1880s to the point that by 1891 the population of the Pyrmont-Ultimo area was 19,177, in 3,966 dwellings.

Industrialisation
The construction of factories, quarries, woolstores and a power station in the early 20th century saw the demolition of hundreds of houses, and a steady decline in population. It was a good site for warehouses because of its proximity to Darling Harbour. Several examples of the Federation Warehouse style can be found along Wattle Street. By 1954, the population of Pyrmont and Ultimo was 5,000, and by 1978 it was just 1,800.
For approximately 10 years from the early 1950s, Harris Street was home to the head office, recording studio, pressing plant and warehouse of Festival Records (Australia), Australia's leading independent record company for almost 50 years.

Redevelopment
By the start of the 1980s, derelict industrial sites began to be redeveloped for residences, mostly as apartments, so that the area is now mainly residential and commercial.
Among the interesting buildings in the area are the Victorian era terraced houses, the brick shell of Davey's Flour Mill, built in 1911, and adjacent to the southern approach to the Anzac Bridge; the Uniting Church on the corner of Quarry Street and Bulwara Road built in 1883 , the TAFE building and the commercial precinct centred around Broadway, Harris Street and Wattle Street.

Ultimo is the home of the Aspire Hotel Sydney, Sydney radio and television studios of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the Powerhouse Museum, Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, the Wentworth Park sporting complex, the Sydney University of Technology, the Sydney Institute of TAFE and the International Grammar School.

A distinctive landmark is the railway viaduct built in 1922 and consisting of 23 brick arches to carry the old railway line through Wentworth Park (now the Metro Light Rail line). It is considered "an outstanding example of engineering brickwork" and is listed on the Register of the National Estate.
